Goal Setting, Targets, Growth Objectives, Meeting a Deadline! Do these terms all sound familiar? I know as readers of this blog, you are going to be shocked by my next statement. Forget them all.
Well, for now anyway.
I am going to discuss quickly the power of “ER”. Not emergency rooms, not Emotional something or other, just the simple addition of the er at the end of a word. For example; happy or happiER? Do you want to go from good to great? How about just “goodER”?
I want to give credit where it is due, and that belongs to fellow Toastmaster Janelle Reichman. Janelle gave a speech at our group a couple of weeks ago, speaking primarily about happiness. How do you measure whether you are happy? What is it? Isn’t it easier to ask, am I happier? Am I happier today, than 3 years ago?
Power of ER
Using the power of ER in other areas, we can see the same benefit. What does it mean to be great? How do I measure it? Should I be disappointed if I am on the right road, but not there yet? If we focus on getting ‘better’ or ‘gooder” as I wrote above, we can measure that. We went from 93% on time to 94.5%, our sales have increased by 7.1% YTD, and our profits are improving. We are getting gooder, we are coming closer to the target, and we should celebrate along with the way.
John Maxwell is quoted as saying “don’t have a goals mentality, have a growth mentality”. If we concentrate our efforts on growth, continuous improvement, and getting better tomorrow, we will most likely meet any goals that are set, and often we will surpass them.
Where is your ER? What ER can you start working on today or tomorrow to get you on the path of growth and continuous improvement?

Since I borrowed this idea from Janelle, here is another plug for her. Janelle also happens to be designing my new website. If you want to check out some of her work, take a look at her company; Continuum Design + Web www.madebycontinuum.com
