In a recent report, Gallup writes that 63% of employees believe it is “very likely” or “somewhat likely” that they could find a job as good as the one they have! So, I’ll ask you again … why should they stay with you?
When there is a high demand for something the value of that something increases. Simple economics, supply and demand in the labor force is out of whack. The product (labor) is no longer just a product. It is a premier luxury item. Labor has gone from being a used Chevy to a shiny new Cadillac in a meteoric rise these past two years.
What does that mean for your business?
When you have an old Chevy, you might skip an oil change right? However, if you are driving a premium Cadillac, you not only get the oil changed, but you put the synthetic brand in. You baby it, treat it well, keep it washed and vacuumed, and make room in the garage for her.
What are you doing for that special employee? Squeezing another cube in an already crowded office? Giving them the rules of how things have always been done around here …
A car can’t back itself out of the parking space and speed away. You can guess what I am driving at (pun intended).
What to do?
We have heard about employee engagement in the past. I have written about it extensively in this blog, and spoken in front of groups about this for a decade. Yet we still have a declining engagement here in the US.
In the past 5-years, employee engagement has dropped in the United States from 38% to 33%!
Why do we continue to see this drop? The employees are telling us what is missing as they walk out the door. Gallup may have given us the main reason as well; “the manager accounts for 70% of the variance in team engagement”.
Ask yourself some questions:
- Does your manager have the same beliefs that you do?
- Are they living out the vision, mission, and a shining example of the culture that you are promoting?
- Do they lead by example? Or are they a do as I say type of manager?
- Are they managers or leaders?
- Do they have a purpose that matches the goals and vision of your company?
- Do you know what they are?
The answer my friend …
There are no easy answers. The only place you find success before work, is in the dictionary. But one place to look is your management and leadership team. What are you doing to develop them? What are they doing to develop their team? Your employees want to be engaged, they want their job to mean something to them. You feel like you make a difference, right? Why should you be the only one in your organization that does?
It starts with you, the leaders that read these blogs and articles. For your organizations to thrive, there must be a systematic way to ensure high levels of employee engagement throughout the ranks. What makes them tick? Are they suited for the position they are in? Do they have talents that are being wasted? Can you align your goals to theirs? Does your vision resonate with them?
